The Samsung UE46B7000 Product Review

By Jean Griffin

Model numbers for this Samsung TV are mystifying. Currys and Dixons make use of UE46B7000. Whether its the 46B7000, Currys, brand (which has a slender red trim decorating the rim) or the 46B7020 (no red edge, sold by Amazon and other online stores), or, sometimes, the 46B7020W or the 46B7000W, its exactly the matching technical specification under the skin.

Initial Views: By far the most imposing aspect of the UE46B7000 is the depth of it. Less than 1.5 inches, in truth. And Samsung hasn't cheated, nothing like some other manufacturers, by moving some of the inner components to a separate joined box. It has a shiny finish, together with a striking slender transparent collar, linking the screen to its base.

Audio: In common with most new Televisions the audio output of the UE46B7000 is poor quality. There is so little depth to allow decent speakers. So, if you're planning on investing a lot of funds in a Television like the UE46B7000 you really need to consider connecting it to separate speakers.

Picture Quality: The exclusive selling point of the UE46B7000 is the fact that it uses LED technology to replace the established fluorescent tube backlighting arrangement found in other Televisions. Not everyone realises that the UE46B7000 is still a LCD Television. it's merely the backlighting that has altered. LEDs have the following advantages:

* LEDs offer a more even light - they make use of a lattice system, rather than the usual fluorescent light source.

* As the LEDs are totally controllable and can easily be completely switched off, they can create faultless blacks.

* Sports and further rapidly moving action look superior as the picture responds faster.

* The assortment of colours that can be shown is larger.

Connectivity: The UE46B7000 comes with four HDMI, two USB, and one LAN port - all nearly everyone of us are expected to call for for a lot of years at least. The LAN one allows the UE46B7000 to open files on your PC network that you might wish to avail yourself of. And the USB ports allow many file formats to be played when a USB stick is put in. As well as permitting a wireless link to your home network - a separate dongle is wanted for this.

There are in fact two remotes. The principle one curves over at one end (planned to lay on an easy chair arm?). A bit surprising to grasp at first, but you get used to it. Just on / off, volume and channel controls are on the second remote - in the main OK for everyday use, however.

Cost in use: The UE46B7000 consumes around 115W in use - well below the normal requirement. Less than a watt on standby.

To Summarise: A great Television in what will definitely be one of a new cohort of LED backlit Televisions. In spite of normal audio quality, the screen quality of the UE46B7000 is excellent. - 29967
