House M.D.' Season 5 on DVD

By Jason Myers

The reviews are variable for Season 5 of House, M.D., which is now out on DVD. Whether they enjoyed Season 5 or not, viewers of the program concur that it was unique. For instance, Cameron and Chase were not included as heavily, and some viewers believed that the season was "cheesier" than other seasons.

Those that enjoyed Season 5 report that the episodes connect with the audience better than in previous seasons, and that the viewer learns more about how House's is haunted by his own demons. The overriding sentiment is that as long as Hugh Laurie is in the show it will continue to be a top rated, smart television show. Even medical professionals who watch the show say that despite its sometimes overblown presentation, the show is very engrossing and does give the audience an idea of the processes a doctor goes through when contemplating a difficult diagnosis.

Viewers who were rather disappointed by House M.D. Season 5 believe that the writing is uneven: the season starts out strong, goes through some less exciting episodes in the middle, then picks up steam during the remainder of the season. One thing that did not win over many viewers was what they believed to be a blatant and clumsy way of hinting at a P.I. spinoff prlogram by introducing a character that was not necessary to the story line. Other objections were that the character arcs were less compelling and that variable quality writing caused House's trademark biting humor to cross the line into unnecessary shock value at times.

The 24 episodes constituting Season 5 allow non-work and professional boundaries to shift repeatedly among the main characters. Guest appearances in Season 5 include eljko Ivanek, Mos Def, and Carl Reiner. The DVD collection includes extras covering new phases of Dr. Cuddy's life, how the show is cast, and the level of accuracy in the writing. The DVD set also contains a 100th episode appreciation, and extra explanation for the show about the patient suffering from the "locked-in syndrome."

Between those watchers who were enthusiastic about Season 5 and those who were less satisfied, the vast majority declare they still like the show a lot and are happily awaiting House, M.D., Season 6. - 29967
